Suzuka

Well race 1 is done - and certainly the race was a good one, and considering the might and budgets of the Japanese factories Ducati and Aprilia did extremely well. Ex superbikers Edwards, Bayliss and Hayden did very well too.

Unfortunately though all this was over shadowed by the huge crash Daijiro Kato suffered coming into the newly altered chican section. Kato\'s heart stopped beating at the track, he was resuccitated but is currently in a coma. More info on what happened at

Suzuka has long been criticsed for being a brilliant but dangerous circuit - every time I\'ve been there riders have spoken out about how the armco follows you round many of the corners, and we all know how unerving this is - when disaster is close enough to touch it takes a barve rider to keep the throttle on. And to be competitive at MotoGP you have keep so much power on the bikes are power sliding. Power sliding at 130 mph between the armco anyone? You get the idea.

The organisers try to compensate by placing large blocks of foam at the dangerous parts, but even so the saftey level at Suzuka is far and away below most of the other circuits.

Unfortunately it may have taken Kato\'s crash to get something to happen.
