CLUB TRIALS CHAMPS, ROUND 4, AUGUST 21, 2005
August trials are usually wet muddy affairs but with the mild winter we have had this one was like a mid summer event – well almost. And we even had a big turnout for a change with 16 riders competing and a couple of new riders to the sport riding around getting the feel of it.
The event was held on Stewart Davisons farm near the end of No 3 Line off the Pohangina Valley East road. We first used this venue back in the late 70’s but it’s been a few years since we last used it. It’s a large rocky gorge that has become rather over grown with scrub and to clear it would take many hours of work and then it’s hard going for the lower grades in the rocky creek. However for this trial we revisited a small area down stream from the over grown hard stuff that I’d forgotten about. It too is vastly changed from the old days but Merv and Warrick George built eight brilliant sections with what was there. Rocks on grass slopes, rocks in the creek and a few banks thrown in as well. Top job guys.
Murray Cottle hadn’t ridden for two months since he concussed himself but still put in best ride in the Expert grade. Fluke Murray – if I hadn’t stalled a couple of times the result would have been different. Warrick George once again was best Intermediate wth a 16 point advantage over PVD. Likewise Andy Anderson showed the way in the Clubman grade losing only 27 points. Ivan Brosnan lost 83 for 4th and still on the trials learning curve. Probably the first trial he’d done that had slippery rocks in a creek.
Once again the three Twinshock riders had their own close battle with the Honda 125 mounted Phil Stephenson claiming the top position.
The next trial will be held on September 18 at the end of Kahuterawa Road, off Old West Road. See you all there. Kevin Pinfold
